Sprinkler fitters build, install, inspect, maintain and repair sprinkler systems on industrial, commercial and residential sites. They can be self-employed or work with construction firms, plumbing contractors, heating and air conditioning companies, building developers or sprinkler system contractors.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret work specifications and fire codes
  • Inspect, maintain and repair piping, fixtures and controls including hydrant, pump and sprinkler head connections
  • Install valves, alarms and associated equipment
  • Connect piping systems to water mains, supply tanks, pumps, compressors and control equipment
  • Test systems for leaks using air or liquid pressure equipment
  • Service and repair sprinkler systems
  • May prepare cost estimates for clients

What You’ll Need

Entrance Requirements

Usually a combination of 5+ years of construction experience, plus high school, college or industry courses in plumbing to be eligible for certification.

Apprenticeship Program: Includes technical training, on-the-job training and exam. Journeyperson certificate awarded after successful completion. As an apprentice, you also earn while you learn.
